In our latest ‘day in the life’ feature, we’ve spoken with Joanne Carrington, a HR assistant who has been at Sewtec for the past seven years, on the apprenticeship she has undertaken at the company and what she thinks of our new facility.
Q: Tell us about your typical working day
Joanne Carrington (JC): A typical day for me can vary depending on what is required of me at the time. I enjoy the fact that no day is the same and I get to deal with different people every day, both internally and externally. My days can involve anything from inducting new starters, attending various meetings on colleagues’ requirements or working in the Finance/Admin team.
Q: What made you choose a career in HR?
JC: I originally started at Sewtec in the Finance / Admin department. I could see that Sewtec was already a successful company and that it was only going to progress even further.
When the opportunity arose to work in HR, I was excited to work for a company that was growing year on year and wanted to be part of that journey.
Q: What would you say the best thing about working at Sewtec is?
JC: The best thing about working at Sewtec is definitely the people. We have a great team and we all want to see Sewtec succeed and continue growing.
Q: Name three characteristics you would say are needed to work in HR?
JC: To work in HR, I would say you need to be approachable, trustworthy and you also need courage to deal with issues that may sometimes take you out of your comfort zone.
Q: What’s been your proudest moment whilst working at Sewtec?
JC: My proudest moment has been knowing that Sewtec has the confidence in me to be able to work in HR and put me through my apprenticeship.
Q: Do you feel inspired by working as part of an award-winning team?
JC: I feel inspired working as part of an award-winning team at Sewtec. It spurs me on to do even better and strive to be the best I can be.
Q: How have you developed your skills whilst working at Sewtec?
JC: I have developed my skills by being given the opportunity to complete a HR Apprenticeship. I have also attended leadership training, which has enabled me to work better within my team.
Q: What do you make of Sewtec’s move to the brand-new facility at Wakefield?
JC: It is exciting to see Sewtec now at the new facility. It is such an impressive building and it is a great advert for the company.
Q: How do you think the new facility will help improve your day-to-day role and help the business grow?
JC: Working at the new facility will be able to help bring in new customers and at the same time, new employees which are wanting to work for such a reputable company.
Q: What aspirations do you have for your career at Sewtec moving forward?
JC: Moving forward I would like to develop my career even further within HR as I enjoy working with all my colleagues and I hope that I can progress within this role.
