Having already spent 13 years at the company, we’ve spoken with our offline programming engineer, Rob Lamin, to get his thoughts on what it’s like to work at Sewtec and how he has been able to develop his skills working here.

Q: Tell us about your typical working day

Rob Lamin (RL): On a day-to-day basis, I’m tasked with programming for setter-operators and teaching new and younger members of staff how to set up and program machines.

Q: What made you choose a career in automation?

RL: The main reason I decided on a career in automation was due to the variety of different jobs you do every day, which keeps things interesting day in day out.

Q: What would you say the best thing about working at Sewtec is?

RL: Working with friendly staff in a pleasant environment is a great aspect of being part of the Sewtec team, and morale is now at an all-time high due to the excellent team working ethic we have now. It’s great having excellent job security within a thriving and busy company too.

Q: Name three characteristics you would say are needed to work in automation.

RL: In my opinion, the three biggest traits you need to work at a company like Sewtec is having a strong attention to detail, the right “can do attitude” and a real passion for engineering.

Q: What’s been your proudest moment whilst working at Sewtec?

RL: Developing machining strategies to save money and time and seeing continuous improvements to production times always makes me feel proud.

Q: Do you feel inspired by working as part of an award-winning team?

RL: Yes of course, it gives me an enormous sense of achievement knowing what we do here makes a difference.

Q: How have you developed your skills whilst working at Sewtec?

RL: I have learned a lot of things since starting – especially from one of the best engineers who still works with us! I started off on manual machines, then was taught how to program on the CNC milling machines.

I quickly progressed onto five-axis programming and manufacturing intricate jobs and have now become an offline programmer which not only involves programming for others but also involves bringing through the next generation of engineers by now passing on the knowledge to them!

Q: What aspirations do you have for your career at Sewtec moving forward?

RL: I want to carry on being the best I can possibly be and continue to be a valued member of an ever-improving and growing company.
