Sewtec Automation Leading the Fight to Reduce Plastic Pollution

3 February 2023

The team at Sewtec are continuing to work with existing and new customers to identify ways to eradicate an over reliance on single use plastic items.

Plastic waste, or plastic pollution, adversely affects our environment, wildlife and its habitat, and humans.  In the UK, over 5 million tonnes of plastic are consumed each year with only approximately 25% of this being recycled.  The requirement to reduce the amount of plastic in everything we use has never been more crucial and the UK has already introduced a number of new measures to tackle this issue, including banning a range of polluting single-use plastics which will come into force in October 2023.

We currently have an over reliance on plastic, due to it being so inexpensive and durable in its use. However, due to the chemical structure of plastic, it is extremely slow to degrade, often taking up to 400 years to break down, which is a major issue. It is paramount that we start to implement far reaching changes, because plastic pollution continues to cause serious damage to our oceans, rivers, and land. Due to the production and manufacture of the plastic, and its disposal, it is also a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions.

Reducing plastic use is everyone’s responsibility and raising awareness about plastic recycling is crucial if we are to overcome the problem of plastic waste and pollution on our planet.

The team at Sewtec are focused on developing innovative and sustainable solutions to support businesses to reduce their reliance on plastics.  We are working with global brands to try and help change this worldwide trend, working towards a re-use, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, and recycle culture. Whether by utilising more sustainable packaging materials and reducing the reliance on single use plastics, or giving new life to existing machinery to avoid throwing away and replacing machinery with new, our engineers have the innovation required to change the way organisations do things for the benefit of the planet.

We are currently working with a UK-based manufacturer to support the removal of over eight million items of single use plastic from their products.  Through innovative design and build we have recently supplied this customer with two bespoke special purpose lines, with a third in commissioning, and once fully installed it will see their single use plastics replaced with a 100% biodegradable product.

Any business looking for ways to reduce their reliance on plastic should contact Sewtec to learn more about what we are doing to help our existing customers, and what we can do to support you becoming more sustainable. Get in touch with us today and let’s talk about how we can help you do better for you, the planet, and your customers.
